40,000 British women are estimated to have had PIP implants
The breast implants manufactured by the Poly Implant Prostheses (PIP) Company are linked to various health issues. We agree that something has to be done immediately to relieve these patients of their anxiety and to assist with the removal and replacement of the implants. We consider that the evidence is strongly in favor of this action to avoid a plague of ailments if nothing is done as soon as possible.
If you have a complication is there legal remedy available
Yes we believe that you do both from the safeguards provided by Consumer legislation and also by presenting a claim for clinical negligence against the hospital where the surgery took place. This could be the NHS or it could be one of the many private hospitals. We would look to see if the patients’proper and informed consent was obtained, whether the surgery was carried out with reasonable care and skill, and whether the defective implant might give rise to a manufacturer’s claim.
A common misconception is that breast implants are done on healthy women to enhance their appearance but many, many surgeries are undertaken by women who have suffered ailments such as breast cancer and have had to have a mastectomy. Before there were implants women simply had their breasts removed which resulted in a great deal of mental and emotional stress for women. The introduction of breast implants was a huge step forward in the treatment of these women but failure to ensure safety of the products used and the standard of surgical care provided has resulted in many women suffering personal injury.
