Janine East

Janine originally trained as a child educationalist.  After working in New Zealand for a year in 2002 and then travelling around Australasia, she returned to Somerset and decided on a career change, starting her legal career at Harris Fowler in 2004 whilst studying with CILEX and her main role was to establish and maintain the Disbursement Funding Scheme [DFS] for the firm. She also assisted one of the Senior Solicitors in a para-legal role which included preparing court papers, speaking to witnesses and clients.

In 2008 she became a Legal Assistant to one of the Partners [Stephen Baker] working on multi-track claims including spinal and head injuries. She found this particularly rewarding to work with clients in trying to rebuild their lives following what were often very serious injuries.  In addition Janine also managed her own case files which included representing client in road traffic accidents, accidents at work and occupiers liability claims.

Janine has continued with her legal studies and has completed the following courses:

  • Level 2 Certificate in Vocational Paralegal Studies (distinction) (2008 – 2009)
  • Level 3 Certificate in Civil Litigation Law and Practice, including Legal Research Skills, Law of Tort, Civil Litigation and Client Care Skills (2009 – 2010)
  • Level 3 Diploma in Law and Practice, including Employment Law, Land Law, Criminal Law and Contract Law, gaining Associate membership of CILEx in August 2011
  • Level 6 Certificate in Law, including include Law of Tort, Client Care Skills, Civil Litigation, Legal Research, Family Law and Law of Wills and Succession, gaining Graduate membership of CILEx in August 2013

She is currently in the process of completing her post-qualifying experience.

Janine finds that the most rewarding aspect of her role at Harris Fowler is building a rapport with her clients.  She sees this as an essential part of the service we provide not only to ensure that the claims are managed smoothly but also to make the experience better and easier for the client.
