What is NFCI?
NFCI or Non-Freezing Cold Injury is experienced when the body is exposed to cold or wet conditions for a prolonged period of time. These conditions can cause the body’s temperature to fall, meaning the supply of blood to the body’s extremities is restricted. When a person is exposed to these conditions for too long it can cause damage to the small nerves and vascular compromise.
What Factors Increase the risk of NFCI?
There are a number of factors that can increase your risk of experiencing an NFCI while carrying out your duties as a member of the Armed forces. These factors include:
- Carrying out static duties such as Guard duties (Stag duties)
- Being of African-Caribbean descent
- A history of cold-related injuries
- No ability to dry yourself or access to dry kit
- Being dehydrated or poorly fed
What are the symptoms of NFCI?
Military personnel who have been exposed to cold or wet weather conditions and suffered an NFCI, are likely to experience symptoms such as numbness, a pins and needles type pain, a burning pain and pain on rewarming. This pain can be acute . A person who has suffered an NFCI is likely to be advised, for the long term, to avoid involuntary cold exposure in circumstances where they are unable to immediately come in from the cold if symptoms reappear. This can put NFCI sufferers at a disadvantage in the workplace.
